Short CV

Philip killen is a contemporary artist whose work explores atmosphere, emotion, memory and the darker poetry of human experience.

Working primarily with coloured pencils and mixed media on paper, his art combines realism with expressive and gothic-inspired elements, creating portraits and visual narratives filled with intensity and psychological depth.

His artistic approach focuses on texture, shadow, emotional symbolism and the tension between beauty and vulnerability. Through layered techniques and meticulous detail, he aims to create works that feel intimate, cinematic and emotionally charged.

Over the years, he has developed a distinctive visual language influenced by literature, music, urban solitude and the emotionalcomplexity of human identity. His work appeals to collectors who are drawn to atmospheric contemporary portraiture and emotionally evocative imagery.

I am a British artist born in  1970 and raised in south east London, a city that shaped my sensitivity to light, rythm and urban solitude.
For the past ten years, I have been married to a Greek woman, carrying Mediterranean light within her, so I spend my life between the United Kingdom and Greece, navigating two contrasting worlds. London's grey introspection and Greece's intense revealing sunlight.
Living across two cultures informs both my visual language and emotional depth, creating a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior worlds.

Brief comment on the Artwork/Technique

This artwork was created using layered coloured pencil techniques combined with subtle mixed media details to build depth, texture and atmosphere. The process focuses on emotional expression, contrast and fine detailing, allowing the portrait to emerge gradually through multiple translucent layers. The intention is to create a sense of intimacy, mystery and emotional resonance.

PORTRAITS of GOTHIC WOMEN (I)

My artistic work focuses primarily on portraits of gothic women, exploring themes of mystery, strength, beauty, melancholy and inner transformation.

I am fascinated by the contrast between darkness and light, vulnerability and power, reality and imagination. Through my portraits, I seek to create characters that exist somewhere between drama and memory, inviting viewers to construct their own stories and emotional connections.

Many of my subjects are inspired by gothic aesthetics, Victorian influences, mythology, literature and the timeless allure of the feminine spirit. Rather than simply portraying psysical beauty, I aim to reveal an atmosphere, a mood and a psychological presence that lingers beyond the image itself.
